Monterosso al Mare is a town of La Spezia province located in Liguria region, northern Italy. Actually it is not a town, but a village. It is one of the five villages in Cinque Terre. The coastline of these five villages and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town itself consists of two areas: the Old Town and the New Town. They are divided by a tunnel. The tunnel is mostly a pedestrian area, because there are practically no cars in the town.
The main attraction of Monterosso al Mare is its beach that runs along most of the coast line and is very popular both among the tourists and local people. This beach is the only big sand beach in the Cinque Terre. In summer this small town is turned into one huge tourist area with the visitors from all over the world.
In Monterosso al Mare there are not many historical monuments. In the comparison with the cultural heritage of Florence or Venice, for example, it seems to have nothing, but it still has some distinctive sights. The most popular of them is the Castle built by the Genoese, which is partially ruined and the parish church of St. John the Baptist (1282-1307).
Monterosso al Mare historically as many of the villages on the Mediterranean was walled to protect against attacks from the sea. This area of the coast was often attacked by Muslim pirates and Vikings. Originally, the village was only accessible by sea or by mule paths. Today these mule paths are turned into the Cinque Terre hiking trails of the national park system.
Also you can rent a perfect cottage for a holiday in Montorosso al Mare or find a suitable offer in one of the hotels of Monterosso-al-Mare. The level of service is rather good despite the town can be actually called a village! And the perfect location of the accommodation will allow you to reach intended destination very quickly due to the small territory of the town. But it doesn’t prevent Monterosso al Mare to be the place that is admired by many tourists all over the world.
